About Me

I'M Katrina Leggett

As a child my family was stationed throughout the United States, allowing me to see the  biodiversity America has to offer.  Landscape both real and imaged has become a unifying theme in my work.  As much as I loved exploring new environments,  as an introvert these transitions proved difficult. I found myself escaping to the worlds I created in my mind and drawing became a refugee.  In a painting you can control what the viewer sees.  I continues to study art in high school with an equal interest in science.

Family ties lead me to Memphis for college where I landed as an Art History major.  A summer job as an art director at summer camp set soon set me on the path to a career in art education.  After earning my masters degree I  began my teaching art to middle school students in Memphis TN.  The first few years after I graduated, I actively painted and showed work locally.   Yet after getting married, moving to Ohio, and starting a new job my own time for my own artistic journey became scarce.

When I had my first child, moved back to Memphis and began yet another new job I stopped creating completely. Sometime after my second son was born I attended a workshop on sketchbook journaling, bough a spiral bound journal of mixed media paper and started to create again. I completed a large scale painting that had been in progress for six years.  That work became the first piece I had accepted to a juried show.

I continued to teach and parent, working on my paintings in the summers and long weekends.  Then the world changed.  Everything was closed.  For the first time in twenty years, I didn’t have teaching or my children extracurricular activities to consume all my energy.  I had time.  I have found myself painting obsessively.  The first few weeks of quarantine I threw myself into creating sitting for six or more hours a day creating a completed work every two days.

For years I had been telling myself that I would make time for my painting when I retired.  I would spend my golden years creating.  It was this year that I realized I have no reason to wait.  If you want to make something happen, then you make something happen.  It is time to treasure every moment of today.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

We all hold our memories dear, yet can't relive that exact moment.  They becomes our mythology, the stories that we tell. A landscape can bring people back to that moment and generic the light through the trees is not about that one tree at the one specific moment in time but about all light in the trees at any moment of time.  Many of my pieces are ambiguous in season real enough to believe but intentionally altered, a fragment of a memory.

Although I often explore new techniques and media I primarily I work with acrylic and gouache on paper, exploring layers of paints and color interactions.   I use stencils, templates and found objects to create silhouettes in my acrylic and mixed media pieces.  My current gouache landscapes are simplified often flatting the picture plane to focus on color and textures and line allowing the paint to be fluid and nearly transparent in places then opaque and flat in others.  As a memory loses detail and a glance is often distorted but both shape our individual stories.

Career Highlights

After graduating from the University of Memphis I embarked on a career as an art educator in the public schools. For the last 22 years I have been sharing my love of  art with my student. Primarily I work with middle school students, teaching them how to become life long learners through the process of creation. I continue to maintain my own art practice.
