Welcome
Katrina Boza Leggett is a painter and educator located in Arlington TN. Born to a military family, she moved frequently across rural America during her childhood. This transient lifestyle created longing for connection which continues to influence her work. Through painting she explores identity, memories and myths as they connect to objects and places.
Family connections brought her to the University of Memphis where she earned a BA in Art History and a Masters in Education. After student teaching in Europe she began teaching middle school art and showing her paintings at local venues.
Currently an art teacher in Bartlett, she enjoys encouraging all students to find their inner artist which fuels the drive to create her own piece each morning. Through her work she encourages the viewer to reflect on moments left behind and treasure what is still to come.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
We all hold our memories dear, yet can't relive that exact moment. They becomes our mythology, the stories that we tell. A landscape can bring people back to that moment and generic the light through the trees is not about that one tree at the one specific moment in time but about all light in the trees at any moment of time. Many of my pieces are ambiguous in season real enough to believe but intentionally altered, a fragment of a memory.
Although I often explore new techniques and media I primarily I work with acrylic and gouache on paper, exploring layers of paints and color interactions. I use stencils, templates and found objects to create silhouettes in my acrylic and mixed media pieces. My current gouache landscapes are simplified often flatting the picture plane to focus on color and textures and line allowing the paint to be fluid and nearly transparent in places then opaque and flat in others. As a memory loses detail and a glance is often distorted but both shape our individual stories.
After graduating from the University of Memphis I embarked on a career as an art educator in the public schools. For the last 22 years I have been sharing my love of art with my student. Primarily I work with middle school students, teaching them how to become life long learners through the process of creation. I continue to maintain my own art practice.
